Childhood is such a great era of our lives. It is the time that made us what we are today.
We learn about new things in school, we have no worries (beside school assignments, tests, etc), we do crazy things, we can laugh without a reason but we may also cry when an elder warns us over a mistake. There are so many things utterly unique about a person’s childhood. As an adult now, I consider my childhood like an island, no longer accessible but still visible. I enjoyed my childhood very much and it made me what I’m today. So many fond memories!!
Sometimes I just wish to go back in time and watch all the things I did. I will certainly not change anything, not even a second from that glorious era of mine. What I recall most about my childhood is my very first contact with 80’s music.
The exact time I’m talking about is 1985-86, when Micheal Jackson was The King of Pop and Madonna was the Material Girl. Those were the only two foreign artists name I knew back then. My Uncle, who was living in Saudi Arab, made a visit back home and stayed for few weeks with us. Among many gifts he brought with him for us, a brand new stereo system was the biggest.
A Sansui D-95M cassette player and a Sansui A-5 amplifier hooked up with a set of Pioneer speakers. This system was installed in our guest room on which my Uncle and others enjoyed music occasionally. Out of countless songs played on that stereo system, credit goes to 4 songs for seeding the love of English music in me:
USA For Africa – We Are The World
The 80’s was all about changing the world, doing something new or breaking the barrier. This song featuring world renowned artists surely changed the world and helped a dying nation.
Stevie Wonder – I Just Called To Say I Love You
Simple, pure and full of love, this hit by the great Stevie Wonder can sure melt anyone’s heart. This song was my Uncle’s favorite and he listened to it many times.
The best part I like about this song is the instrumental intro and later the Saxophone solo. This song is for your dream girl, if you have one. A classic!
This song is what you get when you mix electronic melody and a Tarzan’s cry, which is the main theme. Kind of a weird song as per today’s standard but hey, this is what 80’s was all about.
