Monday’s Odd Ball – April 25

This is the view of outside my home. Beside two parked cars and a motorbike (they aren’t mine), you can notice a cart and a guy. That cart is full of fresh seasonal vegetables belongs to that guy, named Khalid. He is my neighborhood’s vegetable seller.

This is how vegetables and fruits are sold here in Karachi. Actually, not just in Karachi but across Pakistan. We do have markets and departmental stores here and we can buy whatever we need from there also. But to save time, and also from +35°C heat of summer, women prefer this method to get fresh vegetables.

I can sense a question popping in your mind about how you are feeling sorry for Khalid here but he is not the only one around. There are millions across Pakistan who earn their living by stepping out of their comfort, regardless of skin torching heat or bone freezing cold. People like Khalid are the true face of Pakistan and I salute them.

There are cart sellers like this twice a week on the market place in my village. They arrive around 8am and live around 1pm. They sell fresh vegetables and fruits, poutry from their farms, cheese, honey, fish, meat, and sometimes clothes, handbags, etc. This is an institution in all French villages, but also in cities, even Paris. Of course, they are strictly regulated by the EU. Of course, they are not here everyday, all day long.

Wow!! One common thing our two countries have. Over here, they show up everyday from early morning till afternoon.
And there aren’t just fruits and vegetables sellers. The list is very long.
